Quick Pencil Portraits

I've been working on some quick pencil portraits lately. When I just start drawing without thinking, portraits are my go-to subject, but I've been trying to find ways to keep things new. With these recent drawings I start out just mindlessly drawing a shape on the page, without looking. Once I feel I've made a decent amount of marks, I look at the drawing and find interesting interactions that I can turn into a portrait.

I've never been one for 'pretty' portraits because I don't find them as interesting, at least not for me. I'm very happy with these, I've made some different things than I would have otherwise, and I started using my blind line technique to aid my painting.

Rooster Renewal

Some of my etsy shop rooster listings recently expired, and though I wish they would have been adopted by now, it was nice to look back at some of the older paintings and reflect while I was renewing them.

I started my rooster series almost three years ago when I graduated from Tyler School of Art with a printmaking degree and found myself suddenly without the facilities needed to make most kinds of prints. I've always loved painting, too, and though I hadn't worked with acrylic since high school, I decided to start doing some small acrylic paintings as a way to keep making some kind of work. I'd been using the name plasticrooster for online things for a few years before that, and I just thought, ok, acrylic (plastic) roosters. Roosters aren't a subject I've always loved and I don't think I really made any rooster art before I started these paintings, but now rooster items and the paintings are very dear to me. When I first decided to do this, someone told me they doubted I could stick to this one subject for any number of paintings, but three years later, I'm right around 100 and feel there's always a way to rethink the roosters. It's been a very good exercise for someone like me who often felt paralyzed by the concept behind a piece of art. I still like smart, clever pieces, but I also like the roosters as a way of just making something without overthinking.

Rookie is one of my very first roosters. I tend to work on multiple paintings at once and am pretty sure I did this even in the beginning. I believe this was part of my initial group of three paintings. I still like this, it has a nice looseness.

Sprinter is another painting that means a lot to me. I think this is the first painting with extra legs, something that seems to come up a lot in these paintings. I'm not really sure why I started doing this, but I remember a happy little moment when I realized I don't have to make these roosters look like 'normal' roosters.

Victor. I don't have much to say about Victor other than this is the first rooster I remember really, really liking. I have other favorites now, but this was my number one for a while!

It's been fun to reminisce, but now it's on to new work!

I've been working on some new paintings after a long time without painting. My focus for these is trying to really work quickly and make an image without thinking too much. I'm happy with what I've gotten from this technique so far and am excited to continue making work this way!

Drizzle after Drought

This is my first entry in almost 15 months. I never wrote in this particular blog especially often, but for years I blogged daily, and I miss writing, feeling that I'm a skilled writer. I've also been lax with making art, and while I've been drawing more in the past few months, I can't remember the last time I've painted.

Today I re-read the last entry in this blog, from June 2009, and I'd written about someone's doubt that I could stay on the theme of roosters for any amount of time. I still haven't run out of ideas, but sometimes I fear that the theme has run its course. Last week I visited a local fair and took 125 rooster photos. I was glad to go and see the great variation in roosters and chickens and feel that I still have a lot I can do.

I won't try to force 125 photos down anyone's throat, but here are a select few:

I'm glad to be at least thinking of art and writing again, and I hope to throw myself back into these things.

Edie and WIN A PAINTING YEAH WOOOO.

Edie is new today and I am in love with her. I remember this being a painting that started out well and then I left it for a while because I wasn't sure how to continue. When I came back to it, I suddenly had a very clear idea of what to do. When I first started doing these roosters, someone questioned (in a somewhat dismissive way) how long I could stay with the theme. I've done around 80 now, and though I go through periods of creative drought, I really feel you can continue on one theme forever if you want. Really, the whole point for me was to be making work and figuring out different ways of thinking about one subject and about painting, and I think I've been pretty successful with that.

ANYWAY,

I'm doing a contest right now (here on the etsy forums) for one of you lovely people to win a painting. I mentioned, a few entries ago, that I like to write a little bio or story for each rooster by looking at it and imagining a personality. I thought it would be fun to see what other people might imagine for some of these roosters. So, pick a rooster and submit your idea and at the end of the week I will give away a rooster to the person with my favorite entry. Wooooooooooooo.

Cooped Up

I'm starting to understand why, when I was a teenager and said I was bored, my mother would always say she didn't know how I could ever be bored when there is always so much to do. I always feel like there are so many things I'm in the process of doing that I wish I could be devoting all my time to: working my day job to save money, painting, promoting my etsy shop, exercising, maybe even getting some sleep or reading every once in a while. There was a Hives song a few years ago suggesting a 100-hour day. I think that would be good- keep the work day at 8 (or maybe 10) hours and do whatever you want for the rest. Sure, you'd have to sleep several times throughout the day and in general, life spans would shrink to 20-25 years, but it would still be good. I guess I just need to work on being more efficient with my time and limiting myself to just a few big things I want to do each day.

New Painting, Rusty

Listed a new painting today on etsy, Rusty.

In case you don't know, I write a short biography or anecdote about each rooster. I like looking at each piece and thinking "Who is this rooster?" I do the same thing with when I draw or print portraits. I start with a general idea of an image but once I have a basic image down, I start thinking about each rooster or person looks like they would do or be, and those ideas start to inform my decisions about how to continue the piece. I include these stories on my etsy shop under the description page for each painting.

Rusty's story: Rusty really loves old ugly furniture. One time he found a deep yellow velvet couch on the side of the road in someone's trash and he was SO! EXCITED! But he checked out the flip side of the cushions before loading it on his truck and wouldn't you know, blood stains all over the damn thing.

Anyway, I should really be updating this blog everyday. I've been getting a decent amount of painting in. I just photographed 20 new roosters the other day, and I'm working on 14 more. My general goal is to do about 1 painting a day, and that seems very daunting when I think about it that way, but on the days that I do fit in time to paint, I am often working on 5 or more at a time. Seven paintings a week seems so much easier than one a day.

I promise more tomorrow, having things actually photographed makes it much easier.

Debt Reduction Attempt One: Lost in Space

So, I live in the Philadelphia area and my boyfriend lives near Chicago, and we met up last weekend for the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo (SPACE) in Columbus, Ohio. I've been to several of these comics conventions with John, but this is the first one where we really tried to put some of my stuff out. I knew it wasn't really the right forum to show paintings, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to put them out, maybe a couple people would like them. John also helped me put together a booklet of drawings from my sketchbook, with a hand-printed gocco cover. (By "helped", I mean I had a sketchbook and he did basically everything else.)

Anyway, one of the reasons we like to go to this convention is because the table is inexpensive, it's in a location halfway between the two of us, and we (or, usually, just John) make enough money to offset the cost of the trip. So even if we don't make a huge profit, we get to see each other, and that's always a good thing.

Things didn't go quite as well as I hoped. It seemed like maybe there were fewer people than usual who were interested in the kind of work we were doing. I didn't have high hopes but I certainly hoped to at least make my half of the table back, and I didn't. I sold a couple booklets, and some people looked at the paintings and liked them. I also think people had less money to spend than the last couple years. I did make some cool hand-printed business cards, cut out in the shape of roosters, and I thought those were successful. I wanted to make something that's cute and kind of a small piece of art in itself, because I knew people would like that and want to take them with them. I feel like if I picked up something like that, I might hang it on my bulletin board and look at it instead of throwing it away like most business cards I pick up. People liked them, and took them, and maybe they will look at them again and visit my Etsy site. I also had some interest from some people who have an online art magazine, so that's something. I think that right now, it's a good idea to pursue whatever opportunities present themselves.

We actually ended up staying an extra night in Columbus because our original plan of taking our respective 8-hour drives home after the convention on Sunday seemed too draining and somewhat unsafe. I was definitely glad we stayed, but it meant I went beyond the money I had set aside for the trip. Overall, I'm glad we went, and I don't mind spending money to see John, AND I'm glad that I got some people to see my work and take my card...it's still annoying that I would have been financially better off if I just went to Columbus to see John and we didn't go to SPACE. So I have mixed feelings avout the whole thing. As far as debt reduction goes, this clearly wasn't the way to go.

Moving on, I'm thinking about more ways to get my work out there. I'm glad to have some cards now, so I'll start trying to put those out wherever I can. I'd like to start applying to some gallery shows (maybe with prints and not necessarily the paintings) and join some artist organizations. The issue is, all of this stuff costs a lot of money. I'm thinking of entering a local arts-in-the-park show, but it's a $45 application/entrance fee. I don't mind paying $45 for a table, but I don't want to pay $45 to apply for a table. I only have a few days to decide about this thing, and it would be kind of a conflict with work, but it would probably be a good idea. I'm just worried about applying and not getting in. I guess it's true that you have to spend money to make money, so I need to start putting money aside for application fees for various things.

In Your Face

I currently have a show of portraits, In Your Face, at the Cosmic Cup Coffee Co. in Easton, PA.

I don't yet have any pictures of the show itself, but the work is all portraiture, and includes a majority of the etchings from my recent BFA show, along with an interesting series of prints made from copper that was nearly destroyed when I...uh...left the plates in the acid for a week.

Because of the space I was working with for that show, the prints were displayed in a row along the wall. At the current Cosmic Cup show, I was able to display them in a more clustered fashion reminiscent of a family portrait wall. My original intent was a more clustered display, so I'm glad to have an avenue to show the work in this way.

I did some non-inked embossings of the nearly destroyed plates:

These plates were really a happy accident, and these embossings can be seen at Cosmic Cup along with inked versions of each images.

The prints are way better than my shitty photographs, so if you're in the area, stop by, check out the work, and get some good coffee!

Taking Steps.

It's been almost seven months since I've last updated this blog. I've graduated from college and for right now, I'm at home, working at the same restaurant where I've been for the last four years.

I need to take steps to be making more art, to putting more art out there, and start making a name for myself/selling stuff. This is a difficult process because the idea of "selling art" sometimes poisons the idea of "making good art". I'm certainly not putting enough time toward either of these endeavors, and I think I sometimes consider art as something I might be able to do eventually. But this is a bad attitude, and I need to work harder at being disciplined and setting aside time to make work and then to promote it. I need to treat the art career, at least initially, as something very structured.

Let's talk about websites: I have this blog, which is supposed to be my art blog. Clearly needs to be regularly updated. I have my etsy site, which I would reallllly like to do more business with, and I realllllllly need to put more work into. I have a deviantArt account, which has long since been abandoned and I feel like that site is a waste, or it was a year and a half ago when I last used it. But maybe things have changed? I also have accounts on sites called ArtBistro.com and MyArtPlot.com, both of which were joined on a whim, neither of which I have ever used.

I don't think many people will read this, but if you stumble across it and you're an artist, what sites do you use to get your work out there?

I spent about a week in the Chicagoland area, with John. We spent a day at his studio, making viscosity prints. It was a good time, because we are print people.

Today's photo shows a couple of thrift find thats are some of my favorites, ever. Also, it's one of the only decent looking photos I've ever taken in my life, so give me some credit for that.

The little kangaroo dude came from a yard sale a year or two ago; I probably paid about $1. The joey in the pouch is removable but....it doesn't have any appendages. It's just a head and then a stump. My mom called it a "baby penis head". I love my mom. Behind that is my latch hook tiger pillow, which I bought in a NYC thrift store on a trip a couple years ago. I have a another one, a lion head, but it's not as nice as the the tiger pillow. The thrift store had a bunch of these pillows, and they were all pretty great, but they were $6 each, too expensive for a thrift store, so I only bought two.

The olive chair that roo and tigey are resting on was pulled off of the street, trash from the convent next to my school.

Something New Tuesday

This is kind of a mixed bag of topics.

This morning I went and walked around Toys R' Us for the first time in years; it was strange to go in there without the mindset of a child. I was looking for a pool or a sprinkler, something to cool off, but they've already moved on to their back-to-school products. I ended up browsing for about an hour anyway, mostly looking at board games. The whole experience made me look forward to having children, if only for the reason that it will give me opportunity to play with toys again. I think that's the only reason men ever want to become fathers.

New Review: I rented the documentary Jesus Camp. about evangelical Christian children at a, uh, Christian camp. It wasn't the best documentary I've ever seen, cinematically, but it was interesting. It was frightening how easy it is for people to seemingly brainwash children. I'm not religious, but I'm open to other people being religious. However, these children are being taught that war is THE option when facing those who haven't been saved. I guess I knew that people feel that way, but I didn't know they were so blatant about it. I don't understand the need to push your believes down other people's throat, but these people think they're doing a service. What an odd life.

The rest of Something New Tuesday may have to happen tomorrow. I recently ordered some yerba mate, one of my favorite caffeinated beverages, from Yerba Mate Cafe. I ordered some samples of different flavors and brands , and I'm excited to see how they are. They should arrive tomorrow, so I'll let you know what I like as I try them. I ordered as follows:

What the Fuck Friday #1: A Slow Start

Yesterday I was trying to figure out what's been irritating me lately and would make for a good funny/angry rant. There are lots of things, of course, and I won't reveal them now because I'm sure I'll write about them yet.

But. Today I received a myspace message from my former roommate letting me know that we owe the apartment complex $1000 in damages, due in 3 days, and I am too angry about this to make a funny rant about something else. I know that I didn't cause that much damage, and I'm not really willing to pay for any of it, let alone five hundred dollars worth.

I'm not making any plans to pay yet, but now there will be fighting with the apartment complex and potential fighting with the roommate, and even if I don't have to pay, I just really was ready to be done with that place and that situation and, well, living with stuff like this:

Next week I will rant about something funnier and less financially stressing!

ThriftyThursday! Clownin' Around

This week's selection is something, I admit, I wasn't going to buy.

My mother and I stopped at the Elephant's Trunk consignment shop in Emmaus last Saturday morning. It's been there my whole life but I was never interested enough to go in. The shop was recently remodeled and my mom wanted to check it out. I wasn't particularly impressed; many of their items were much more expensive than they should have been. However, they have a basement with stuff for cheap people like me. The basement is unfinished, so you get the feeling of going through your dead grandma's old house looking for things to sell at the estate sale, but I find that atmosphere interesting.

Mom picked up this coat hanger, and said didn't I think I simply must have it.

No, not really. It's kinda funny, but I wasn't in love with it. I've been trying to cut down on unncecessary spending, and I find that a lot of things I buy at yard sales or thrift shops because they're amusing and they just end up sitting around collecting dust. Like that life size plastic mannequin head that looks like a caveman. Should I really have spent $8 on that? I thought of my wastefulness and decided against the coat hanger, but Mom said I'd regret it. All her pushing made me want the thing, and I just rearranged my room and didn't have anywhere to put my purse when not in use, so maybe this wouldn't be a total waste of $2.

That's right, all that internal struggle for $2 (plus tax).

Now that I've hung it, I quite like it, if only for the fact that it helps with my new life motto, A place for everything and everything in its place. Or should I say "BE A DEAR, HANG IT HERE"?

I used to have a blog in which I wrote well and often. Then I got boring and my readers got bored and, well, we all gave up our commitment to each other. I think we've all had enough of blogs about nottthhhhing, so I decided to give this mofo a little bit of structure to make it interesting for me and for you.

On a different note, I wanted to write about an opportunity to help an etsy member. Becca of http://beccasbeauties.etsy.com recently started a donation page to help defray costs for her mother, who has recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Today's Assignment, Part One of [?]

I like the idea of having little goals for myself, or of having little learning activities for myself. I thought it might be interesting to extend it to blog format and see if other people are interested in participating. So here goes.

Today's Assignment, #1: Today, draw a self-portrait in ink, no pencil sketch, no erasing. The time limit for this assignment is five minutes, you must stop drawing after five minutes even if the drawing is not done. If you are so inclined, email finished assignment to me at plasticrooster[at]gmail.com with your name and/or any link you want me to include (for your etsy, blog, etc.)
